Research and Development Services

Chemistry Consulting, Chemistry Research, and Chemistry Product Development:

ECA is also involved in many products using our experience with analytical chemistry, formulation, and development of consumer products. ECA was founded as an analytical testing laboratory. In the many years we have provided services, we have become a chemical consulting laboratory in many aspects of chemistry. We have developed numerous analytical testing procedures for unusual compounds or unusual matrices for clients. We have also developed many consumer products, some with minor direction from our clients and some with complete freedom. Besides the analytical methods developed and used, below are some of the major projects that we have successfully completed:

 Chemical Filter for Portable Hemodialysis Device:

We have recently finished a project that involved developing and testing a chemical filter that removes metabolic waste products from the blood of uremic patients undergoing kidney dialysis. The chemical filter was used on a unique portable kidney dialysis system that cycled electrolytes through the chemical filter continuously removing urea, creatinine, and other harmful metabolic water products that are necessary to be removed during kidney dialysis. We have extensive experience in this area with the formulation and testing of standard and modified dialysis solutions as well as used dialysis solutions that have been through the dialysis process with animal and human testing.

Development and Assembly of Agar Gel Test Device for Electroporation Equipment:

We have helped in the development of a test substance that mimics human muscle for the purpose of testing an electroporation device for injecting particular pharmaceuticals into patients.

Skin Penetration Studies:

We are also working on some ongoing projects that involve using porcine skin as a model for human skin to determine skin penetration of various active components in topical products. We also have the capability of performing Franz Cell skin penetration studies. The Franz Cell test allows formulators to determine whether a particular formulation delivers a particular active ingredient through the skin. It can also be used to compare the skin penetration of various products. We have also perfected a mechanism of identifying and quantifying all of the lipids in sebum using thin-layer chromatography and densitometry.

Consumer Product Analysis and Development:

ECA has many years of experience working with consumer products. Product deformulation requires a combination of research and chemical analysis to successfully identify and quantify all of the inorganic and organic chemical compounds in a product. With our understanding of the functions of the ingredients in these products, we can often reproduce a new product that is more effective for the particular use of the client. We have developed many different types of products. Our list of types of products that we have deformulated is an indication of what types of products that we could develop.

Tooth Whitener Development:

We have been developing tooth whitening agents since the early days of this technique in the middle 1990’s.  ECA has developed numerous tooth whitening agents from 1% to 35% Hydrogen Peroxide formulas and 5% to 40% Carbamide Peroxide formulas. We also have developed formulations using Chlorine Dioxide, Sodium Perborate, Sodium Percarbonate, and many other oxidizing agents that have efficacy in tooth whitening.
